VPN Cost Comparison Calculator

Turn every VPN billing option into the same numbers — effective monthly cost, 2-year total, and per-device cost — and see which plan is really cheapest.

VPN pricing pages show a low monthly figure in large type — but that figure usually assumes the longest plan, paid up front. This calculator turns each billing option into the same three numbers so you can compare fairly: effective monthly cost, total cost over two years, and cost per device.

Enter your prices and click Calculate to compare the plans.

How to use

  1. Find the total price for each billing period on the vendor pricing page — not just the advertised monthly figure.
  2. Enter the monthly price, the full yearly total, and the full 2-year total in the boxes above.
  3. Enter how many devices you will actually use, then click Calculate.
  4. Compare the 2-year totals first. The lowest 2-year total is the cheapest option, even if its monthly figure looks similar.

How VPN pricing works

A VPN provider sells the same service at different prices depending on how long you commit. A monthly plan costs the most per month but lets you leave anytime. A yearly plan spreads a lower total over twelve months. A two-year plan is usually cheapest per month, but you pay the whole amount up front, so you are paying for months you have not used yet.

The advertised monthly price is almost always the long-plan price divided by its months. For example, a plan advertised at 3.75 dollars per month might actually cost 89.99 dollars up front for two years. That is a fair way to show the average, but it hides the up-front payment and the renewal price, which is often higher than the first-term price.

Device limits matter too. One subscription often covers five or ten devices at once. If you protect a phone, a laptop, and a tablet, the per-device cost is low. If you only use one device, a cheaper single-device option — or a shorter plan — may be better value despite a higher monthly figure.

Hidden costs to watch for

Worked example

Example prices only — these are illustrative numbers, not any real vendor current prices. Monthly plan: 12.99 dollars per month. Yearly plan: 59.99 dollars for 12 months. 2-year plan: 89.99 dollars for 24 months. Devices: 5.

Effective monthly cost: monthly plan 12.99 dollars; yearly plan 5.00 dollars (59.99 divided by 12); 2-year plan 3.75 dollars (89.99 divided by 24). Total over 2 years: monthly plan 311.76 dollars; yearly plan 119.98 dollars; 2-year plan 89.99 dollars. Per device per month on the 2-year plan: 0.75 dollars. The 2-year plan is cheapest overall, but only if you use it for the full two years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the advertised monthly price lower than the monthly plan price?

The advertised figure is usually the long-plan total divided by its months. A plan shown at 3.75 dollars per month may require an up-front payment of about 90 dollars for two years. This calculator shows both figures so the comparison is fair.

Is the longest plan always the cheapest?

Only if you use it for the full term. Over two years, a long plan usually has the lowest total, but if you cancel early you may lose the value of unused months.

What is the renewal price, and why does it matter?

The renewal price is what you pay when the first term ends. It is often higher than the first-term price, so a plan that looks cheap in year one can cost much more in year two.

How many devices do I need to count?

Count every device that will use the VPN at the same time: phones, laptops, tablets, and any family devices. The per-device cost falls as more devices share one subscription.

Does this calculator track real vendor prices?

No. It only calculates from the prices you enter. Example numbers on this page are illustrative only. Always check the vendor site for current prices before buying.
